Cheater Cheater

So I play in an adult rec volleyball league and earlier this evening, we played against a team that we have defeated during the regular season. This time though, in the semi-finals, we got rocked. It wasn’t pretty.

Now, I wouldn’t normally be annoyed about losing a match, but the thing is, our opponents brought 2 subs to play on their team which were not on their roster. The rules also state that specifically for playoffs, a person is not allowed to play on the team if they are not on the roster.

So having said all that, the league director still allowed them to play because he thought the subs would have th equivalent skill as the original players. My question is, why have a rule at all if it won’t be enforced in the end?

Good Bye Blogger

So I had about 2 months of mysterious issues between Blogger and my hosting service, which resulted in me not being able to make any new posts. I did keep writing though. The thing is, while making an entry and knowing that nobody was going to read it, felt kinda weird. Is the blog really for me or is it for the world?

Here’s to my first official entry with Wordpress!

Another Day Wiser

So as we age and turn another year older, it usually feels uneventful, especially if it’s on a weekday. People usually ask someone how it feels to be “another year older,” but really, you’re just another day older. I’d say when your birthday falls on a weekday, there’s nothing really big about it because you’ve gotta work that day as well as the day after. By the time the weekend rolls around, your birthday is over. I suppose people can call it a post-birthday celebration.Scarf Girl, signing off.

The ‘24′ Recipe

So I’ve been a fan of the tv show “24″ since the very beginning. After 4 seasons, it appears that there’s a formula for creating a season of 24.1 Super Rambo-esque Government Agent (SRGA - he never seems to die!)
1 Super Genius Computer Whiz (who can hack into any computer system)
2-3 Co-workers of the SRGA (who are put in situations which break the rules; sometimes they break them, sometimes they don’t)
1 Mastermind (oversees things from a dark locale)
1 Primary Plot for World Devastation
1 Secondary Plot for World Devastation (because you’ve got to try to do two evil things)
1 Decoy Plot for World Devastation (because you have to distract the good guys)
1 Band of Evil Villians (work for the Mastermind and are completely expendable; they usually last on average 4-7 episodes. If they last longer, they are really important!)
1 Foolish Youth (gets into big trouble and Jack has to rescue him/her and possibly compromise the mission)
1 Love Interest (who also gets into trouble)
1 Mole on the Good Guy’s Side
1 Back-up Mole (optional)
1 Leader on the Good Guy’s Side that gets in the way of progress (and really frustrates the viewers!)

Enjoy another exciting season!

1 Week Employed

Today is the one week aniversary of my employment. I’d say things have been going well in terms of me learning about the business and trying to get things organized. While organizing bills and following up on things is fairly easy, it’s the understanding of tech project management that will be challenging. I sat in on a conference call with a client the other day and lots of fancy lingo were spewed out that I wasn’t quite sure I understood completely. Well, I guess I’ll have to learn!

First Day??

So today was the first day of work at my new job. Yes, I have a new job. I’ve had this job lined up about the time I quit my job, which meant that my last 2.5 months off was a long vacation, and not a time of job hunting and interviews.I felt a lot of anticipation before starting this job since it’s one of those jobs that constantly evolve as I will be tackling many rolls. After finishing up for the day, it felt a bit anti-climatic because there was nothing formal about anything. I suppose the only formal thing was signing my employment contract.

I guess this is what happens when the environment is fairly casual and there is no overbearing HR manager staring you down and scrutinizing everything you write on your forms. In fact, there were no forms. I wonder if I’m really employed… I guess I’ll know when payday rolls around.

Stolen Cart

Today I decided to see if I could find some discounted holiday ornaments and wrapping paper at a nearby Target. I was with a friend of mine who wanted to buy a candle, so we put it in the cart. Since there were so many other folks in the aisles rummaging for what’s left of the sale items, I decided to park my cart in an area adjacent to the sales aisles. After browsing a few minutes and finding nothing I wanted, I walked back to the cart to find it missing. I thought maybe my friend went grabbed the cart, but then I spotted my friend’s candle on a shelf next to where the cart used to be.

I grabbed the candle and searched for my friend, who didn’t have the cart. Somebody stole my cart! I’d say it’s okay to take an abandoned cart, but not a cart with stuff in it!! RAAR! I guess the holiday spirit is over.

Slot Machine Luck

Happy 2006 to all! So I was up in Tahoe for the weekend to celebrate the new year. It all started on Thursday morning as I headed up to our rental cabin to settle in and relax. There was some rain, but for the most part, our drive up was smooth. On Friday morning, it started to really rain as we headed over to Homewood for some snowboarding. Most of my friends rode the lifts up to the mountain, but as I was lacing up my boots, I decided that boarding in semi-heavy rain was not my idea of a vacation. So, I headed to the snackbar area and sat down with a nice spiced apple cider. Eventually, I saw my friends coming into the lounge area with their jackets, snowpants and clothing fairly wet. It was a short day for most.

Friday night, it was still raining hard, so most of us stayed in and enjoyed card and board games.

Saturday morning, NYE, is when all the “excitement” begins. Around 10 in the morning, most of us decided that with the heavy rain, which became snow later on, we would stay in and relax, and then POOF all of our electricity was gone.

Some folks headed out to the casinos on the North shore in the afternoon and stayed there till a few hours before midnight. The rest of us stayed in the cabin and entertained ourselves with sledding around the cabin, building annatomically correct snowpeople, and packing snowballs.

Eventually the rest of us joined the gamblers and while I was scouting for a fun slot machine to play, I sat at a $1 Wheel of Fortune slot and ended up winning money. Woohoo! Slot machines are mostly evil, so I’m pretty excited about not losing my money.
